ZIVO

As part of the UX Design specialization within the bachelor’s program in Communication and Multimedia Design (CMD) at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA), the task was to design an app for VodafoneZiggo, which was later presented to their design team. The objective was to create an app that enables users to manage various types of entertainment offered by VodafoneZiggo, with a focus on adolescents and young adults aged 16 to 34.

To meet the needs of this demographic, extensive research was conducted on their app usage patterns, preferences, and the existing apps offered by VodafoneZiggo. The final design resulted in an app that seamlessly blends traditional media feeds, such as films, TV shows, and programs, with modern, social media-inspired scrolling reel feeds, creating a unified entertainment experience.

Research

The initial research focused on understanding the current offerings of the My Ziggo and My Vodafone apps and services, identifying the apps most popular among young people, and exploring why these apps appeal to them. Additionally, key functions valued by users aged 16 to 34 were examined, along with how VodafoneZiggo’s current apps are used by this demographic. This research provided an overview of VodafoneZiggo's services and key insights into the behavior of the target audience. Data was gathered through interviews, observations, and product testing of VodafoneZiggo’s services. Card sorting exercises were also conducted to gain deeper insights into how different media and social apps are used.

The findings revealed that entertainment is the primary reason for app usage among young people, followed by social connection and social media engagement. Social apps, in particular, were the most popular, with streaming services playing a secondary role to user-generated content. The 15-second reel-like video format was especially favored by the demographic, and content was often discovered through social contexts or algorithm-driven recommendations. Notably, very few young people were aware of or used VodafoneZiggo's existing apps, and there was no clear overview of all available content in their current services.

The insights from the research directly informed the app’s requirements, ensuring it aligned with the target demographic’s behaviors. Since entertainment and social connection drive app usage, the app needed to provide a clear overview of social media and streaming content while fostering interaction through shared experiences. It was also essential for the app to complement VodafoneZiggo’s existing services without replacing core features. Given the popularity of the 15-second video format, this had to be incorporated to engage users. Additionally, the app had to make managing and storing content simple, continuously offer new content, and enhance the social aspect of watching series. A niche content advice algorithm was also necessary to deliver personalized recommendations.

Concept:

The Zivo-app is designed to seamlessly manage both user-generated and streaming service content in one place. It provides users with an overview of all available content through a unified feed, allowing easy access to their favorite media. A dedicated library enables users to store various types of content, making organization simple and intuitive.

Additionally, the app makes it easy to create and share content from traditional media platforms directly to social media platforms, enhancing the user's ability to engage with both personal and streaming content in a single, streamlined interface.

unified reel/clip feed

The app features a Clip + video feed that displays short, 15-second content from both social media and traditional media sources like films and series, blending them into a contemporary, engaging style. Alongside this, the Clip+ feed also integrates shows from streaming platforms such as Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube, and public broadcasters into a single stream. Additionally, there is a feed for classic media that includes news, text-based posts from platforms like Twitter and Facebook, and images from Instagram. A search function allows users to easily find content across platforms, while a library organizes this media, enabling users to save and manage their favorite content seamlessly.

Cut & share feature

A standout feature of the Zivo app is the Cut tool, which allows users to effortlessly trim and capture moments from both user-generated content and traditional media directly within the app. Whether it's a memorable scene from a film, a highlight from a series, or an engaging clip from a content creator, users can easily repurpose these clips for their social media posts. This feature simplifies the creation and sharing of personalized content, making the app a valuable tool for enhancing social connections. By supporting the social aspect of media sharing, Zivo aligns hereby with the millennial/gen-z target demographic’s preferences for interactive and social engaging experiences.
