As part of the bachelor’s program in Communication and Multimedia Design (CMD) at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, the first group assignment focused on creating an app to assist users in cooking a pre-assigned recipe. The project centered around a design process that involved testing the recipe and iterating week by week. The final product was well-received, with positive feedback highlighting its landscape layout, the inclusion of features such as a timer, alternative pathways for experienced cooks, and clear navigation designed for ease of use.

One of the main components of the design process involved testing recipes to ensure they could be effectively formatted for the app. The selected recipe was a delicious and aromatic curry, inspired by a cooking video provided by the instructors, who served as YouTube chefs for this assignment.

Testing the recipe
Testing the recipe offered valuable insights into the cooking process and the specific needs of users. This process revealed key areas where the app could add value and enhance the cooking experience, including clear and easy-to-use navigation, even with messy hands, additional handy tools, and a horizontal orientation for improved balance.

User tests
Through multiple user tests with different prototypes, we were able to design an intuitive and visually stunning app that received praise for its landscape layout, addition of features such as a timer, and alternative pathways for experienced cooks. The app also featured an emphasis on clear navigation for ease of use.
Screens
This demo showcases the final iteration of the recipe assistance app, designed to enhance the cooking experience with clear navigation and large, easy-to-press buttons for a user-friendly interface. With its intuitive landscape layout, built-in timer, and customizable pathways for experienced cooks, the app simplifies the cooking process while offering flexibility for different skill levels. By incorporating feedback throughout the design and testing phases, the app was refined to ensure an optimal user experience, making cooking more enjoyable and efficient.
